Cyprus Info

Cyprus is the third largest island of the Mediterranean and is at the crossroads of three continents: Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Its position has always made it an important trading station as well as a very convenient military outpost, making it desirable to common people and empire leaders alike. Throughout Cyprus’ history one country or another has forever wanted to conquer her and she has undergone 9000 years of constant invasion, most recently by Turkey, who invaded in 1974 and still illegally occupies the north of the island. However Cyprus has remarkably always been predominantly Greek and whilst it may have been influenced by different civilisations over the ages, it has managed to preserve its own culture and traditions.

Climate

The Cypriot climate is typically Mediterranean, with very hot weather during the summer, particularly in July and August. Temperatures can soar over 40°C (around 105°F) but refreshing relief can be found at higher altitudes and along the coasts. Winters have little rainfall with temperatures averaging between 5°C (42°F) and 15°C (59°F).

Languages

The primary language spoken is Greek with a minority of the population speaking Turkish and English is widely used as a second language for trading and tourism.

Religion

Greek Orthodox 78%, Muslim 18%, Maronite, Armenian Apostolic and Christian 4%

Main Cities and Towns

Nicosia

The world’s only divided capital is separated by the “Green Line” (a demilitarized zone maintained by the United Nations). It is normally the hottest city on the island due to its central location inland. Eleftheria Square links old Nicosia with the elegant modern city that has grown up outside the ancient walls, where hotels, offices, restaurants and gardens blend happily with the fine old houses and colonial buildings of this cosmopolitan city.

In fact the whole town of Paphos is now included in UNESCO’s official world cultural heritage list.
